The Machine of the Saint in Mandamados

The Mandamados communal olive mill, constructed between 1905 and 1909, bears an inscription above its entrance reading marking its inauguration date: “May 9, 1909”. The land was donated by Panagiotis Tintsaris and Efstathios Machairas, while local residents built the mill with voluntary labour. The facility, dubbed I Michani t’Agiou was designed by self-taught master builder Asimakis Fouskas and inspired by the industrial architecture of Britain.

Its equipment was procured from the factories of Demosthenis Isigonis in Smyrna. The mill complex includes a courtyard, perimeter storage areas for olives and oil, and a central building divided into three sections: the main production hall with an olive press and wooden platform for feeding olives to the millstones, a boiler room, and a steam engine room.

The mill marked a turning point for Mandamados, offering small- and mid-level farmers an alternative to the exploitative practices of large mill owners. It operated until 1967 and was later acquired by the state. Now restored, today it functions as a cultural centre.
