Church of Saint Nikolaos, Oinousses

The grand cathedral of Saint Nikolaos, who serves as the protector of both the island and its seafaring community, was constructed in 1952. It dominates the heart of the town, built on the site of the old church, which was demolished in 1924. The church is richly adorned with intricate iconography. Inside, there are thousands of votive offerings from sailors, as well as a relic of the saint, brought from Sicily in December 2001. Every August 15th, the religious tradition of the Burial of the Virgin Mary is celebrated with great splendour and reverence.
